American Grass Seed Producers (AGSP) is proud to introduce Ocala annual diploid ryegrass. Ocala is a result of the breeding efforts of Ann Blount and Gordon Prine from University of Florida. Testing of Ocala began in 1998. The initial objective of the first selection of nursery plants was the removal of plants showing crown rust or Grey leaf spot. This selection process continued through 6 more cycles where diseased plants were being removed and attention was given to those plants that showed excellent forage capability, as well as seed yield potential. Ocala was also being selected in three other sites, one in north Florida, one in Louisana, and one in Oregon, specifically looking at plants that maintained the other attributes but also showed cold tolerance. All these selections were combined to produce Ocala a very good disease tolerant and good cold tolerant annual ryegrass that is high forage producer.
